About

The Romería del Rocío is Spain's largest religious pilgrimage: each Pentecost over a million people and a hundred-plus brotherhoods converge on the village of El Rocío, on the edge of Doñana, to venerate the Virgin of El Rocío amid wagons, horses, flamenco and the dramatic \"leap of the railing\".

Highlights

  • Spain's biggest pilgrimage — over a million people each Pentecost.
  • Brotherhoods travel by horse, ox-cart and on foot across Doñana to El Rocío.
  • The midnight "salto de la reja" (leap of the railing) when the Virgin is brought out.
  • Sand streets filled with flamenco, sevillanas and traditional dress.

Practical tips

  • El Rocío is about an hour west of Seville (Huelva province) — accommodation is scarce, plan ahead.
  • The most intense moments are overnight from Pentecost Sunday into Monday.
  • Respect that this is a deeply religious event, not a staged spectacle.
